Inspirational Speaker – Raising Mental Health Awareness With a Smile

Raising mental health awareness
‘Matthew’s story of living with depression and the mechanisms he’s developed to help him is inspiring. I’m sure that all academics, students and members of the public that attend his talks, will take some valuable pointers away from Matthew’s experiences. It was fantastic – if anyone is lucky enough to have the opportunity to hear him speak, we’d highly recommend it!’

Matthew’s Story

Matthew always felt he had a charmed life, until he didn’t anymore. Despite being newly married and having a career in sport that he loved, in 2006 depression knocked him off his feet. He almost didn’t get up.

Upon recovering, Matthew’s life continued along its charmed path and he landed a job in boxing, his lifelong passion. He met and worked with some of the biggest names in British boxing. He became father to two beautiful children. What more could a man want? But it didn’t stop depression from pounding on him some more, and in 2013 he hit the canvas harder than he ever had before.

Again, he got back up, but life wasn’t finished with him yet. In 2014 his marriage collapsed and his life as he knew it was turned upside down.

In 2015 Matthew hit back, by taking up his pen and writing. He discovered a new passion, and a talent that he never knew he had. Writing led to many new opportunities culminating in the publication of his first book in December 2017, the bestselling ‘Something Changed: Stumbling Through Divorce, Dating & Depression’.

Raising mental health awareness with a smile

Now Matthew is using his experiences for raising mental health awareness, to challenge the stigma that surrounds it, and to inspire others to reach for their goals and to become the greatest versions of themselves.

He is especially passionate about encouraging men to feel more able to admit to their struggles, to speak about them and to feel able to seek help, emphasising how this shows great strength, not weakness. With depression being referred to as a ‘global crisis’ and as the second greatest cause of illness by 2020, and with suicide being a leading cause of death amongst young men, this is a pressing issue for us all.

A champion for the national Time To Change campaign, Matthew aims to inspire people to find greater purpose and meaning through life’s challenges, to become the champions of their own lives that they were born to be.

‘The students were completely engrossed. I don’t think I have ever seen them so quiet and listening so intently. Matthew’s story captivated his audience and held their attention throughout. A perfect mix of sincerity, candour and a great sense of humour. I cannot recommend Matthew highly enough and have already encouraged other schools to arrange a visit; an absolute pleasure and l am looking forward to working with him again in the future.’
